As the shadow of the annual night of witches looms, when humans cower and offer sacrifices to tormentors (fun-size Snickers, in a plastic bucket, presented to a 6-year-old dressed as a pony), only one brave soul has emerged. She has declared imperviousness to fright. She dares Halloween to bring its gloom, to ignite its witching hour. She will laugh in its ghoul-face. In Katie Holmes’s words: “I don’t have any fear now.”

Katie Holmes, hubristic vigilante, has declared her immunity on the cover of People magazine in a speech of vagaries that was described as a “three-part mantra.” In it’s completion, it is this: “I don’t have any fear now, I don’t have a lot of rules for myself, and I don’t take myself that seriously.” She didn’t set out to be a leader against terror on the eve of Hallows, but it’s the mantle she’ll hold.
